Thermofoil doors are made from a Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) core which is highly resistant to warping. The surface of the door is a PVC laminate and is more consistent in color than wood, hence color matching is more uniform from one door to the other.New Kitchens Plus source our doors from a supplier that uses 100% Canadian made MDF along with a high end PVC from Germany.
Kitchen with MDF Doors
MDF is made from resin and recycled wood fibres which have been pressed into solid, dense boards. For painted cabinet doors, MDF tends to be the more popular choice. Like any material, the MDF will still expand and contract (though not the extent that solid wood does), but because the door and frame move as a unit, the movement does not cause cracking and peeling. MDF is often a less expensive option than solid wood. With MDF you take extra care to avoid it being exposed to extremes of temperature and humidity.
Kitchen with Wood Door
Stained solid wood fronts create a very elegant, natural and timeless look. There are many stains to choose from depending on the look you want to achieve. Manufacturers usually have a range of colours that they offer, but also provide custom stains and matches. Any wood can be stained, the type of wood you choose depends on the variety of the grain preference. Always look at samples before deciding on specific wood species as stains may bring out more grain variation and imperfections than expected.
